Advent 2025

Luke 2

As Luke records the circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus in the second chapter of his gospel, several powerful images provide perspectives on the identity and destiny of this child. These images include:

  • “Peace,” declared by an army of angels (Luke 2:13-14)

  • “A light,” as Jesus is identified (Luke 2:25-32)

  • “A sword,” prophesied to accompany Jesus’ ministry (Luke 2:33-35)

  • “Redemption,” the soon-fulfilled hope of many (Luke 2:36-38)

Through the angels, Simeon, and Anna, we understand from Jesus’ first days on earth that the work he came to do is going to be multi-faceted. If we humans had only suffered from one simple problem, God could have sent a simple solution. But our plight is multi-dimensional:

  • We have entrenched ourselves as enemies of God (meaning that we need to be reconciled to him)

  • We can’t see God for who he is (meaning that we need him to be revealed to us)

  • We have an adversary who opposes us, attempting to derail any connection with God (meaning that we need a deliverer who is willing to fight on our behalf)

  • We have become enslaved to sin (meaning that our freedom needs to be purchased)

All of these needs and more are fulfilled in our one Savior, Jesus Christ.

As we prepare to celebrate his birth this Advent, we reflect on the multi-dimensional work he accomplished on our behalf, as prophesied in the narratives found in Luke 2. Our prayer is (a) that this would enrich our own appreciation of Jesus’ saving work, and (b) that unbelieving guests who visit this Advent would meet Jesus in a way they’ve never met him before.

Let’s make much of Jesus!
