Membership

We have a saying at North Sub: “no spectators.” That’s our way of reminding each other that we want our church family to be an oasis in the desert that is suburbia’s low-commitment, anonymous, consumeristic way of doing church.

But of course, many suburban Americans enjoy “hopping” from church to church. We go to one church for weeknight gatherings and another church for Sunday mornings. We go to one church when their ace preacher is preaching, but when he takes a week off, we go elsewhere. We do small group at one church and youth group at another church… so that we can make the most of all the options without limiting ourselves to one!

What’s the harm? After all, we go to one grocery store for produce, another for staple items, and a third for baked goods! Why not sample to get the “best of all worlds” when it comes to church?

At North Sub, we believe that this (very normal) mindset actually results in significant harm as we miss out on the fullness of what God intends church to be: namely, a family in which every member is accountable to the others, and every member plays an active role.

For that reason, when you visit, you’ll experience us as a family of committed brothers and sisters, each participating and using his or her gifts to benefit the whole. And eventually, once you’ve visited a few times as our guest and decided that you want to make North Sub your church home, we’ll encourage you not to remain on the sideline watching ministry be done by others; rather, we’ll invite you to become a member and find a place to serve.

Everybody has a place at North Sub. Listen here for more from Pastor Tim on the importance of membership in finding that “place” and living out what God has called you to do.
