Plunge 2017

Plunge Questions

Questions for October 15 Sermon

1) What does Amos 9:11-15 contribute to Amos’s message that hasn’t been prominent in the rest of the book?

2) Knowing what you know about Israel’s identity among the nations of the world (consider esp. 2 Chr. 7:14 and Dan. 9:18-19), what is so shocking about Amos 9:12?
3) James quotes from Amos 9:11-12 at the Jerusalem council of Acts 15:1-29. What point does he make in his use of this text?

Questions for October 8 Sermon

1) Use a study Bible or commentary to learn about the

relationship between the words translated “summer fruit” and “end” in Amos 8:2. How does this contribute to your understanding of the vision?

2) Use a study Bible or commentary to learn what it means to “make the ephah small and the shekel great” in Amos 8:5. What do Leviticus 19:35-36, Proverbs 20:10, and

Micah 6:10-11 have to say about this practice?

3) Search the occurrences of the phrase “pride of Jacob” throughout the Old Testament. What do you think this phrase refers to in Amos 8:7?

Questions for October 1 Sermon

1) Read Amos 7. How are Amos and Amaziah different?

2) In Amos 7:7, God says He will use a “plumb line” to judge His people. We read something very similar in Isaiah 28:16-17. In context, how are these plumb lines the same and/or different?

3) God is PATIENT (2 Pet. 3:8-9). God is MERCIFUL (Mic.
7:18). But God is also HOLY (Lev. 10:3). And God is JUST (Ps. 7:11)
How do you understand the apparent tension between these character traits of God?

The writer of Ecclesiastes made his own conclusion in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.

Questions for September 24 Sermon

1) Use Bible Gateway or Blue Letter Bible to look up every time the phrase “day of the Lord” shows up in the Old Testament.
What can you determine about that event?

2) Amos 5:18, 6:1, and 6:4 all start with the funeral cry of “Woe.” What three categories of sin are introduced by these three “woes”?

3) In Amos 5, God rejects Israel’s worship. He also does so in Isaiah 1; Isaiah 58; Jeremiah 7; Micah 6; Zechariah 7; and Malachi 1-3. What do all of these have in common?

Questions for September 17 Sermon

Three questions for consideration as you read Amos 3-4 in preparation for next week’s message:

1) In Amos 3-4, God says through Amos that His Word of Judgment was against the whole family of God meaning both the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. When and why did the kingdom split? (See 1 Kings 12:16-24.)

2) Why was God holding both Israel and Judah accountable? See Deuteronomy 30, especially verses 15-20.

3) How did worship in Israel break the Law of God? See 1 Kings 12:25-30.

Questions for September 10 Sermon

1) Use this map http://bit.ly/NSEFC091017 to look at the locations of the nations mentioned in Amos 1:1-2:16. What seems significant about the locations of the nations rebuked by the Lord?

2) What common actions are the nations rebuked for (Amos 1:3-2:3)? What is Judah rebuked for (2:4-5)? What is Israel rebuked for (2:6-16)? What do you think accounts for the differences?

3) How does Exodus 22:25-27 help us understand the action being condemned in Amos 2:8?
